- Attendee, January 2021

"I really enjoyed the session and came away with a much better understanding of the impact of transitioning into secondary schools for adoptive children."
- Attendee, January 2021

Why you should attend

  • You will have an opportunity to learn what CCS is doing in terms of a specific aspect of work with teenage adoptees, whilst at the same time having the opportunity to identify the situations you find most challenging and work in smaller groups to consider various solutions.
  • You will be able to network with practitioners from other agencies: whether you are new to adoption or have been working in adoption for many years, this is a chance to share best practice and glean new ideas.

Details

CCS Adoption will share ideas and advice aimed at supporting adoptive parents through their child’s education. There will be a particular focus on supporting parents to enable a successful transition from Primary to Secondary school for their child.

CCS created an Adopter Forum last year, which brought together the knowledge of experienced adoptive parents, some of whom also bring their experience as teachers and Head Teachers. Lots of positive ideas led to an action plan that aimed to encourage more collaborative working between parents, social workers, therapists, school staff, SEND coordinators and virtual schools.

During the webinar, attendees will have the opportunity to share their experiences of the challenges faced by adoptees and their parents in education, and to learn from the experience of others. Jane Thompson is a CCS adoption adviser and adoptive parent of teens. She and her colleague Frances Barker, a CCS assistant social worker and adoptive parent, have taken the feedback from the CCS Adopter Forum and pulled together some very practical advice for adoptive parents, in particular to support Y6 to Y7 transitions.

They will share this work with attendees who will also hear from adoptive parent Lisa Clifford about her personal experience over the last three years, preparing her son for transitioning to senior school. He began Year 7 in September 2020; Lisa’s preparations began when her son was in Year 4. Jane and Frances will also be joined by CCS social worker Beth Manning who has had her own challenges supporting adoptive parents and has a particular interest in this area.

Learning outcomes

  • Greater knowledge of the educational challenges adoptees are facing
  • Awareness of the need for more collaborative working
  • Discussions/group work (opportunity to learn from each other’s practise)
  • The detailed steps taken by an adopter supporting her son through his Y6/Y7 transition
  • The CCS Adoption Y6/Y7 transition plan agreed with the CCS Adopter Forum
  • Attendees will be able to adapt this for their own use and to share with adoptive parents, once it has been published on the CCS website
