Why you should attend

In many cases life story work is undertaken at the point to permanence and there are varying standards across the services. It is our responsibility to give children and young people a living chronology of their life story, family history and ultimately a true sense of their identity.

  • This workshop will consider the provision of Life Story work for adopted and care experienced young people across the UK, and present methods currently used for undertaking the work.
  • You will be invited to consider why Life Story work should be prioritised and look at best practice in supporting these young people to gain clarity and increase their understanding of their early life and in care experiences.

Details

  • You will hear from Family Care Society and ARC Adoption considering how young people not living with their birth families can benefit from Life Story work, and how the work can improve a young person’s sense of identity and promote a positive sense of worth.
  • Both agencies are passionate about providing high quality child centered life story work. They are very excited at the prospect of a child or young person and significant people in their life, including siblings and birth families, being able to contribute to their life story.
  • ARC Adoption will present ARCBOX, a child centered, therapeutic, digital life story tool, which has the functionality to enhance a child’s identity, giving a timeline of their past history up to the present day. You will have the opportunity to view and explore the functionality of ARC Adoption digital life story platform.
  • Through discussion of the Life Story process, a range of effective communication methods will be explored, where each individual’s age, ability and understanding is taken into consideration.  Practical suggestions and ideas for working directly with young people will be discussed, which can help individuals’ piece together and develop a coherent understanding of their own histories and provide truthful answers to the many questions they have about their lives.
  • Consideration will be given to how to share information about difficult topics and support carers/ adoptive parents gain confidence in discussing these issues.

Sarah Johnston, Life Story Project Manager at Family Care Adoption Services and Vanessa Martyn, Marketing and Business Manager at ARC Adoption will present on the day.
