3.5 hours CPD

Adoption practitioners and managers (Voluntary Adoption Agencies, Regional Adoption Agencies and Local Authorities) and Independent Professionals.

VAAs have a long and successful history of finding families for children from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds and are fully committed to anti-discriminatory practice. However, Black Lives Matter has caused us to pause and reflect and challenge ourselves to do more; to listen, learn and take action, acknowledging our individual and collective responsibility to tackle racism and discrimination wherever we find it.

IAC Centre for Adoption has been working with adult adoptees, hearing their experiences to inform the work they do today with their adoptive families and children and this training is a unique opportunity to explore the issues they have raised and the relevance they have for the children being adopted now.

At this training session, you will learn:

  • How does racism affect children’s wellbeing and mental health? How does it affect family relationships, especially when only some members of a family are experiencing racism?
  • How can we get adoptive parents to move away from this idea of ‘colourblindness’ that erases children’s experiences? What is a more helpful framework for parents to understand the experiences of their children when their children are of a different ethnicity and heritage?
  • What is the research on this topic
  • How can we support adopters to support their children to explore their racial and ethnic identities?

You will have an opportunity to learn what IAC Centre for Adoption are doing in terms of a specific aspect of this work, whilst at the same time having the opportunity to identify the situations you find most challenging and work in smaller groups to consider various solutions. You will be able to network with practitioners from other agencies, share best practice and glean new ideas.

A member of staff will be in touch with attendees one week prior to the event to share a pre-event delegate pack and detailed instructions on how to connect to the webinar.
