4 hours CPD

For

Adoption practitioners (Voluntary Adoption Agencies, Regional Adoption Agencies and Local Authorities) and Independent Professionals.

Overview

We all recognise that in the general population, separation and divorce, and re-constituted families appear to be a more common occurrence than previously. Currently we are all living through strange and challenging times, and we don’t know whether Covid-19 and the lockdown will have brought some families closer together or forced some families to see that their future has to be apart.

However we do know that when a child is placed for adoption, the hope of all concerned is likely to be that that child will finally be offered the security, love and consistency that has probably been lacking in their earlier lives.

Separation and divorce are likely to re-emphasise and amplify the loss and trauma of the child’s earlier life. Being part of a relationship which is breaking apart, having to face potentially living between two households are huge challenges for any child but especially for an adopted child.

Details

This webinar is to help give professionals some further insight and tools when working with and supporting adopted families who are going through the unfortunate journey of separation and divorce. Separation and divorce is a challenging and emotional time for any family, however adopted children who are experiencing this can find this extra challenging in many additional ways.

  • Many adoptees are already experienced with loss and lack of control in their environment, and this can reignite those feelings and fears, after finding a secure family structure.
  • Conflict between parents can be the most damaging aspect of the divorce, not the divorce its self, so it is important that parents keep this to an absolute minimum, and work together to remain child focussed throughout.
  • In the webinar it will be looked at how to support families with, advice, tools and tips, for understanding, communication and to move forward positively with blended families, new partners and children having two homes.

In the practice webinar, you will have an opportunity to learn what Adopters for Adoption are doing in terms of a specific aspect of this work, whilst at the same time having the opportunity to identify the situations you find most challenging and work in smaller groups to consider various solutions.

You will be able to network with practitioners from other agencies, share best practice and glean new ideas.

You will hear from Sarah Sharwin, the Team Manager at Adopters for Adoption and Sally Heaven-Richards, the Head of Service at Adopters for Adoption.
