5.5 hours CPD

Adoption practitioners and managers (Voluntary Adoption Agencies, Regional Adoption Agencies and Local Authorities) and Independent Professionals.

In this seminar, Lindy Wootton (CSS Adoption) and Debbie Watson (Bristol University) will present the outputs from the research project: Difficult Conversations: developing research-led training in dealing with looked after and adopted children’s difficult life story questions.

This is a project that they have been working on together since 2019 along with colleagues from Gloucester LA. This has involved data collection with a range of adoption and fostering stakeholders including adopted children who have then gone onto become voice artists in the films we will share with you. The outputs comprise an online training pack of materials that can be used with adoptive parents, carers, professionals and young people to address how everyone can have better conversations about care. They firmly believe these conversations should not just be about the life story book or the reasons a child was placed in care, but the everyday, non-threatening small conversations that help children to understand who they are, where they came from and why they may be in new family or care arrangements.

Lindy and Debbie will explain how their concerns about life story work have led them to approach this topic in this way and present the children and young people’s perspectives through a paper that has been published.

Participants will be asked to consider:

  • Their own experiences of life story work and life story conversations
  • What their fears and hopes are for good care conversations
  • What children and young people say about difficult conversations and what they want adults to understand and do
  • How the training materials and web resources might be useful
  • How they can have difficult conversations with children and young people and why this is important

A member of staff will be in touch with attendees one week prior to the event to share a pre-event delegate pack.
