5.5 hours CPD

Adoption practitioners and managers (Voluntary Adoption Agencies, Regional Adoption Agencies and Local Authorities) and Independent Professionals.

How is engaging birth fathers different than birth mothers? What are the challenges to getting them through the door? Once they’re engaging, what challenges might you encounter? How do you need to alter your approach based on how they are presenting and how might this be different from working with birth mothers?

The evidence seminar will look at:

  • Working with anger in the room
  • Working with men who have suffered sexual abuse
  • ‘Caught in the past’
  • Boundaries, fear and safety (this one is wild, it’s a story about the things some people will do to feel more empowered, like miss a session without telling the therapist, or turn up late, or leave early…but one guy would bring a GIANT SNAKE to therapy)
  • Managing the shame monster

You will hear from Prof Georgia Phillip at University of East Anglia presenting findings from their recent research on Understanding Fathers’ Repeat Appearance in Local Authority Care Proceedings and Joanne Alper, the CEO of Adoption Plus.

You will have an opportunity to learn about the latest research, whilst at the same time having the opportunity to identify the situations you find most challenging and work in smaller groups to consider various solutions. You will be able to network with practitioners from other agencies.

A member of staff will be in touch with attendees one week prior to the event to share a pre-event delegate pack.
